Boys’ basketball: More controversy coming with Sierra Canyon being in Division V
- Share via
The state basketball championshps are set for Friday and Saturday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, and one of the first games is Division V boys, where Chatsworth Sierra Canyon will take on San Francisco University at noon.
And it might not be very pretty.
Sierra Canyon (25-4) is no Division V team. The Trail Blazers were ranked No. 1 in Southern California at one point this season. They lost, 64-60, to national power Viriginia Oak Hill. They were selected for the Southern Section Open Division playoffs, but a loss to Etiwanda in the quarterfinals resulted in the team being placed back into their original division for state.
University could find itself wondering who are these imposters playing Division V?
Sierra Canyon is loaded with outstanding underclassmen who figure to make the team one of the best in the nation next season. The state championship game is almost the first game of 2015-16 for the Trail Blazers, though they won’t get back injured forward Ira Lee until next season.
University (28-7) has to be a good team to reach the final, but in Sierra Canyon, the Red Devils are facing an Open Division team that was dropped to Division V.
Let the debate begin about how that can happen.
