Football: A changing of the guard in the Coliseum League

Romans knock off Crenshaw

Share

Crenshaw and Dorsey have been the dominant football teams in the Coliseum League for years. 2015 could mark the changing of the guard.

Los Angeles (6-0) handed Crenshaw its first league defeat since 2011 last week. Now the Romans get to face Dorsey on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium for the chance to pull off a sweep of the big two that hasn’t happened since . . . maybe decades.

If Los Angeles pulls it off, it can’t get too comfortable, because another upstart, unbeaten Hawkins (6-0), is preparing to make its own run at the league title. Hawkins is loaded with underclassmen being heavily recruited and is just waiting for the final three games of its season when it faces Crenshaw on Oct. 23, Dorsey on Oct. 30 and Los Angeles on Nov. 6.

Crenshaw’s loss is an opening for Dorsey and first-year Coach Irvin Davis. The Dons (3-3, 1-1) are a feisty bunch. They’ve come back in several games, showing a refusal to give in.

Junior quarterback Jerman Gotoy can hit the open receiver. And the Dons can run the ball behind Devon Mangrum, Parie Dedeaux and Antwone Williams.

Los Angeles, though, has a big-time junior quarterback in Kaymen Cureton. He faced lots of pressure from Crenshaw and came through with two well-thrown touchdown passes. He has already won twice at the Coliseum in his career.
