City Section to move forward with possible sanctions against Hawkins High’s football team

City Section Commissioner John Aguirre said Thursday he would consider possible sanctions against Hawkins High after the school failed to respond to a deadline seeking answers to allegations involving transfers within the football program.

Aguirre said a Los Angeles Unified School District investigation found “some improprieties in transfers and with the process of eligibility.”

Hawkins’ failure to respond before Wednesday’s deadline could also lead to action from LAUSD. Messages left for Hawkins administrators were not returned.

Hawkins, 11-0 and seeded No. 1 in the City Section Division II football playoffs, was allowed to compete in the playoffs because the selections took place before a final decision on eligible players could be made. However, if ineligible players were used during the playoffs, the City Section would have the authority to remove Hawkins.

This is not the first time Hawkins has been in trouble with the City Section and LAUSD. It was ineligible for last season’s playoffs after ineligible players were discovered during the 2014 season. The football program has been the recipient of more than 40 transfers in the last three years.
