Football: JSerra is 3-0 and developing new cast of standouts

Share

A year ago, everyone knew JSerra would be good and the Lions went 10-2. They had a veteran quarterback in Nick Robinson, a standout running back in Edward Vander and top defensive players in David Eugenio and Daniel Bailey.

They’ve all moved on, but the Lions are 3-0 this season, led by a group of players that are just beginning to make names for themselves.

JSerra has one of the best offensive lines in Orange County, keyed by 6-foot-5, 275-pound Luke Wattenberg.

The new quarterbacks are underclassmen. Sophomore Matthew Robinson is Nick’s brother. Junior Riley O’Brien is the brother of standout safety Conor O’Brien. And freshman Ryan Hilinski is the brother of former Upland quarterback Tyler Hilinski and former Sherman Oaks Notre Dame QB Kelly Hilinski.

Perhaps no individual has made a bigger impact than St. Francis transfer Avery Williams, who’s averaging 11.4 yards a carry with 354 yards rushing and five touchdowns.

The Lions are almost certain to go 5-0 before starting Trinity League play on Oct. 9 against Servite. You can call the standouts “no names” right now, but by then, everyone should be pretty clear who’s leading an unbeaten team.
