Paul Knox, who guided Dorsey to four City Section championships in football and was considered among his peers to be one of the most respected coaches, has agreed to become the head coach at Washington Prep.

Knox, 63, coached Dorsey from 1985 through 2014. He spent last season as an assistant coach at Dymally.

Knox had a meeting with Washington administrators earlier this week to gauge their support and came away determined to help rebuild a program that ended up forfeiting its final game last season.

“I listened to the situation,” Knox said. “They didnt have a coach, and it’s getting late, and I felt the kids are being short changed and it’s a shame there wasn’t a coach. I felt it was an obligation, something I needed to do for the kids and give them an opportunity to have some of the things others in the City have.”

Washington plays in the Marine League, where Narbonne and Coach Manuel Douglas have been dominant. Douglas has considered Knox a mentor for him.

Washington was previously scheduled to play Dorsey in a nonleague game but that game has been canceled.
