Football: The Desean Holmes show

Alemany senior has speed, hands

Share

Unless you asked Desean Holmes of Alemany, you’d never know that he has been running on the sand near the Santa Monica Pier trying to improve his speed, as if he were slow.

He just wants to get faster and faster, but his speed is pretty good and his moves and hands make him one of the best receivers in Southern California.

Last semester, he attended Pasadena Muir, so it was an intriguing scene on Wednesday night at Alemany facing Muir in a passing competition.

“It was fun,” he said.

The challenge for cornerbacks in the fall is that if you focus on stopping Holmes, Alemany can always hand the ball off to running back Dominic Davis, one of the fastest players in the state. Davis and Holmes have been playing for the Warriors since last week.

“What a difference,” Coach Dean Herrington said.

So who’s going to cover Holmes? Maybe his cousins at Newbury Park, Darick, a senior, and Darnay, a sophomore.

“They can keep up,” he said.

But who’s the best of the Holmes cousins?

“Darnay will probably be the best,” Desean said.

Let’s hope there’s a Holmes vs. Holmes matchup looming later this summer.
