Football: Troy Thomas already having impact at Crespi [Video]

It’s all-out work in weight room

Troy Thomas spent eight years as head coach at Anaheim Servite before returning to his alma mater, Encino Crespi. Anyone who doesn’t think he means business ought to spend a Saturday morning watching what he does in the weight room with his players.

It’s the “Countdown” drill. Players have to do sit-ups and push-ups and shout out the count each time in unison. Sixty-nine players filled the weight room. Those who fail to follow instructions are immediately sent outside. Only 12 players made it through Friday’s session.

What Thomas is trying to teach his players is focus, discipline and relying on each other. The players are spending four days and three nights at Crespi this weekend as the start of football camp.

“As it gets harder, we get tougher,” Thomas shouted to his players.

“When something bad happens, you have to handle it,” he told them.

Championships aren’t won in the first few days of training camp, but finding out who is going to give his all can lead to success, and based on sweat and effort, Thomas is already making a difference.
