California football received a big boost on Friday night when Westlake traveled to Arizona, Alemany was in Washington and Bishop Amat was in Texas and all three teams came away victorious.

Junior running back Chase Jasmin scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the game winner in the final seconds, in Westlake’s 34-27 win over Red Mountain in Mesa, Ariz. Jasmin, a junior, helped the Warriors improve to 2-0 going into next week’s showdown game against Long Beach Poly.

Dominic Davis rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns and Kevin Summers had three sacks in Alemany’s 31-14 win over Eastside Catholic in Sammamish, Wash. Alemany (2-0) plays Narbonne next week.

In the biggest surprise, Bishop Amat (1-1) poured it on against Aledo, the top-ranked Texas 5A team, 42-7. Damian Garcia passed for 175 yards and three touchdowns.

Westlake survived 99-degrees temperature to start the game, resulting in cramps.

“Red Mountain went to a no huddle when they saw us dragging,” Coach Jim Benkert said. “We were sucking air. We had more issues than we thought. We knew it was going to be hot. But when you kick off and it’s 99 degrees and gets hotter . . . I was sweating in the fourth quarter, but maybe because it was a close game.”

Alemany players woke up at 3:30 a.m. on Friday, boarded a plane a few hours later, got to their hotel at 11 a.m., took a nap, then went out and won.

“A Washington coach was laughing at me,” Coach Dean Herrington said. “We saved a little money.”

Westlake is headed home Saturday after the freshman team plays. Alemany is staying Saturday to watch the Washington-Eastern Washington game that features former Alemany quarterback Vernon Adams.
