Football: What went wrong at Chaminade?

Share

Never in Ed Croson’s 17 years of coaching has one of his teams not made the football playoffs _ until this season at Chaminade.

Friday’s Mission League game against Gardena Serra will end Chaminade’s season. Last year, Chaminade won the state Division II bowl game and finished on Dec. 21.

“This is new ground,” Croson said. “We’ll go back to the drawing board. We’ll look at all the things that made a difference and start to address the issues.”

Chaminade is 5-4 overall and 1-4 in league. A move to a tougher league appears to have left the Eagles unable to deal with having to play tough games week after week.

“We’re going to try to figure out how to get better,” Croson said.

Serra and Chaminade know each other well. They used to focus on their yearly games in league and then play each other for a section title. Serra (6-2, 3-1) is very much in the hunt for a league title. Unlike past years, when Croson might hold back a play or two knowing he’d get a second chance to play Serra, there will be no holding back this time.

Then, win or lose, Chaminade’s season is over, and Croson will have to figure out what he’s going to do with his free time.

“We have to be problem solvers,” he said.

There also might be a fishing trip in his future.
