New CIF rule regarding practice time is close to being passed

Share

If all goes as expected, a new state rule that will limit sports teams to no more than 18 hours of practice time a week and no more than four hours in one day will become official this weekend when the CIF Federated Council meets on Friday and approves the new regulations at its meeting in Los Angeles.

The rule would take effect in August with the start of the new sports season for 2014-15.

And no practice will be allowed following the conclusion of any contest (coaches who are angry will have to figure out a new way to punish their players).

Section commissioners will have to decide penalties, such as a loss of practice days.

Roger Blake, executive director of the CIF, said California has been behind other states in trying to control the amount of practice time devoted to high school sports.

The NCAA had previously passed legislation restricting college practice time.

“I think for 95%, it will absolutely have no impact,” Blake said. “For the 5% going way overboard, it will get them doing it the right way.”
