Track: Dorsey shows off speed, which is good news for football team

Dorsey dominates

There’s still a group of athletes who think it’s better to keep practicing on the football field instead of trying to get faster in track.

That’s not the case at Dorsey High, where football players are getting faster running track.

At Thursday’s Coliseum League track finals, there were so many football players running around that they could have held a seven on seven game if someone volunteered to play quarterback.

The fastest Don of all was running back Antone Williams, who will be a senior in the fall. He ran away from the field in the 100 meters, winning in 10.89. Mark Nunez of Dorsey won the 200 in 21.95.

But even more impressive for the Dons is the young talent. In the freshman-sophomore 100, freshman running back Charles Mincy had to hold off 6-foot-4, 215-pound freshman defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux. Mincy ran 11.35 and Thibodeaux 11.57. They’re going to be quite a duo over the next three years. Both are 15 years old.

Another top athlete but non-football player to watch is Jojo Lambey, a basketball player/triple jumper headed Dillard University in Louisiana. He went 19-9 in his only attempt in the long jump but is favored to win the City Section triple jump when the finals are held May 26 at Birmingham High. He won Friday with a mark of 43-5.

A big development in the girls’ ranks was the return to the track of Nia Toliver of View Park Prep. She ran in the relays after missing the prelims because of illness. The outstanding rugby standout intends to apply to be added to next week’s City prelims in the girls’ 100 and 200 on Thursday at Birmingham.

The whole Coliseum League should be proud at the number of multiple sport athletes competing. There was basketball standout Ryan Campbell of Crenshaw winning the 1,600 and 800. There was basketball standout Lafayette Dorsey of Dorsey winning the long jump at 21-5. Hawkins sophomore receiver Jalen Hall ran a relay leg in the freshman-sophomore 4 x 100 relay.
