Nevada coach TJ Bruce is quite a recruiter. Two years ago, he took away pitcher Jake Jackson from El Toro. Last year it was pitcher Owen Sharts from Simi Valley. And this year, he signed pitcher David Hays from St. John Bosco.

On Monday, Hays threw a two-hit shutout of No. 2-ranked Mira Costa 1-0. He struck out nine to outduel UCLA-bound Jared Karros, who struck out eight in six innings. St. John Bosco is 3-1.

“He gave us fits,” Mira Costa coach Keith Ramsey said.
