UCLA’s Richard Brehaut misses practice, Kevin Prince misses passes

UCLA had one quarterback sit out practice while the other’s play was erratic Tuesday.

Richard Brehaut hobbled in a walking boot after suffering a sprained left foot. X-ray results showed no damage and he is said to be “day to day.” Kevin Prince, meanwhile, labored through the day, following up crisp passes with bad ones.

Coach Rick Neuheisel, though, kept his finger off the panic button.

Whether Brehaut can participate in Saturday’s scrimmage remains to be seen. Neuheisel said there would be another scrimmage the following week and that he has “a wealth of information as to which guy is going to be the first trigger puller,” though seemingly not enough to announce his choice at this time.

“I will announce it when I know,” he said.

Brehaut has performed well the last week, but was injured during practice Monday. He said the swelling after practice had made X-rays prudent.

“This won’t be around very long. I expect to play on Saturday,” Brehaut said.

Still, it cost him a day of competition.

Prince’s performance was improved from Monday, but Neuheisel said, “He wasn’t as sharp as he needs to be,” adding that accuracy was the problem.

“I have been through slumps before,” Prince said. “When it happens, I go back to the basics my dad taught me in the backyard.”

Neuheisel wants Prince to improve his footwork. Prince said, “I’m trying to build a muscle memory because I have so many other things to worry about.”

Brehaut also had to worry about his feet, or, rather, his foot.

“I have had a pretty good camp so far, so I don’t really feel this is going to be affecting me at all,” Brehaut said. “When I come back, I’m going full speed. I’m not going to be limping out here.”

But watching was hard Tuesday.

“When the offense struggled a little bit today, it was frustrating that I couldn’t go in there and get in the huddle and tell guys, ‘Let’s pick this up,’ ” Brehaut said.

Cid advances

Guard Albert Cid, a transfer from Citrus College, was with the first team for the first time Tuesday. Offensive line coach Bob Palcic said he wanted to “force feed him a little bit.”

“He’s coming around faster than I anticipated,” Palcic said. “He’s got good balance and a little pop to him. He takes on linebackers and has good movement at the point of attack.”

Guard Chris Ward was moved to the second team.

Graham out

Cornerback Jamie Graham, a transfer from Vanderbilt, will undergo surgery to repair cartilage in his right knee Wednesday. He will be out three to four weeks, Neuheisel said.

Graham had surgery on the same knee last October.

Boot camp

UCLA kickers Kip Smith and Joe Roberts continued to struggle, and a new face joined the crowd. Linebacker David Allen was wide on a 37-yard try.

Neuheisel said Allen’s try was in fun. Allen, who kicked in high school, said he was told to work on kicking this summer.
