Real Madrid wows fans in 4-1 rout of Galaxy

The Galaxy isn’t used to hearing boos while in Los Angeles, but every time the Galaxy thwarted a Real Madrid attack early Saturday night, the 56,211 at the Coliseum voiced their disapproval.

Fortunately for the fans, and for any Galaxy players wishing to hear cheers of any variety, Real Madrid didn’t have prolonged trouble scoring, cruising to a 4-1 victory in the exhibition match.

The loudest cheers came when Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo utilized some fancy footwork to create a goal in the 52nd minute. Ronaldo entered the match to start the second half, and seven minutes later showed why he was 2008 FIFA world player of the year.

With Galaxy defender Bryan Jordan impeding his path, Ronaldo moved left, right, and back again, eventually finding himself a few feet from the end line. Without hesitation, the world’s highest-paid player found an angle to the inside of the net, leaving Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk no chance for a save.

Real Madrid midfielder Jose Callejon opened the scoring after Kaka deftly threaded a pass to him through the Galaxy back line in the 31st minute. With only Galaxy starting goalkeeper Josh Saunders to beat, Callejon fired home a shot from about 12 yards to Saunders’ left.

Real Madrid newcomer Fabio Coentrao stole the ball after Galaxy defender A.J. DeLaGarza misplayed a cross-field pass. Coentrao then moved the ball forward to Kaka to lead to Callejon’s goal.

Real Madrid forward Joselu brought some style to the goal-scoring fun in the 40th minute. Marcelo set up Joselu with only Galaxy midfielder David Beckham between the Spaniard and the goal. Joselu tried to dribble around Beckham for a second or two before opting instead to shoot straight through him. Beckham deflected the shot slightly as it flew between his legs to the back of the net.

Real Madrid’s fourth and final score beat Perk when Coentrao sent a long pass across the front of the net to the waiting forehead of forward Karim Benzema. Benzema headed the ball in from point-blank range.

The sole Galaxy goal began with a save from Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adan of midfielder Jovan Kirovski’s shot. The save bounced right to Adam Cristman, and the Galaxy forward headed it in.

Kaka’s solid return from an injury-plagued 2010-11 season and Ronaldo’s nifty goal resulted in both of them trending on Twitter in the United States, while Cristman’s tally earned him trending status worldwide.
