Falling ice injures workers at Cowboys Stadium

Share

Snow, ice and frigid temperatures made driving treacherous Friday and led to a freak accident at Cowboys Stadium that sent six people to the hospital.

The injuries — one of them critical — were to contractors hired by the NFL to prepare the stadium for Super Bowl XLV. Snow and ice fell from the stadium’s roof. None of the injuries was considered life threatening.

Meanwhile, as much as five inches of snow fell overnight, leading to canceled and delayed flights and roadways strewn with disabled cars.

The forecast calls for sun and temperatures in the 40s on game day, although the Super Bowl will be played indoors (the retractable roof will be closed).

The foul weather raised concerns about what problems could befall future Super Bowls in Indianapolis and New York.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the response of the North Texas authorities.

“This is a storm that is impacting most of our country,” Goodell said. “There are very few places that aren’t dealing with the aftereffects of this storm. It’s an extraordinarily rare storm. It’s something that this community has responded well to.

“When we chose to play in climates where this is more likely to happen, they are very capable of dealing with these types of issues and we have been very comfortable playing there.”
