Top players: Irvine — Brian Hernandez, 3B (.351, 31 RBI); Drew Hillman, OF (.336, 5 HR, 50 RBI); Jordan Fox, 1B (.335, 25 RBI); Matt Summers, P (11-2, 1.72); Matt Whitehouse, P (4-0, 2.14). Virginia — Danny Hultzen, P (11-3, 1.57, 148 SO); Will Roberts, P (11-1, 1.61); Tyler Wilson, P (8-0, 2.34); David Coleman, OF (.369, 39 RBI); Steven Proscia, 3B (.341, 8 HR, 58 RBI); John Hicks, C (.339, 7 HR, 54 RBI).
Outlook: Irvine won the Los Angeles regional without having to face UCLA pitchers Gerrit Cole, who went first overall to Pittsburgh in this week’s Major League Baseball draft, and Trevor Bauer, drafted third overall by Arizona. The Anteaters get no such a break against top-ranked Virginia this weekend. Hultzen was drafted second overall by Seattle. It won’t get much easier against Roberts, picked in the fifth round by Cleveland, or Wilson, picked in the 10th round by Baltimore. Summers, who will face Hultzen in today’s opener, has an 0.36 earned-run average in his last three starts.
