AT THE PLATE: Hank Conger hit a solo home run, a double and a single, Peter Bourjos had a solo homer and a double, and Chris Pettit, who is making a strong push for a reserve outfield spot, had a two-run double and an RBI single. Minor league outfielder Clay Fuller crushed a grand slam to left in the eighth.

ON THE MOUND: Jason Bulger’s chances of making the team are fading, as are Francisco Rodriguez’s. Bulger loaded the bases in the seventh when he walked two and hit a batter, but he escaped the jam by striking out Mike Aviles. Rodriguez, who gave up a three-run homer to the Cubs’ Carlos Pena on Monday, gave up three runs and three hits, including Billy Butler’s homer, in the eighth.

EXTRA BASES: Kevin Jepsen, expected to be a key late-inning reliever, was scheduled to pitch against the Royals but was scratched because of left hip tightness. Manager Mike Scioscia said the move was precautionary and that Jepsen should return to the mound in the next day or two.
