UCLA’s Kevin Prince unlikely to participate in spring practice

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince is unlikely to participate in spring practice, Coach Rick Neuheisel said Wednesday.

Prince underwent arthroscopic surgery and a microfracture procedure on his injured right knee and has not fully recovered.

UCLA begins practice Tuesday.

“Kevin will not do much except isolated throwing,” Neuheisel said. “I had hoped that he could do seven-on-seven drills, but I’m told he won’t be able to.”

UCLA will be short on quarterbacks. Darius Bell is out after undergoing shoulder surgery. Nick Crissman will be on a “pitch count,” Neuheisel said, after his second shoulder surgery. And Richard Brehaut, who started seven games in place of Prince, has been playing for the Bruins’ baseball team.

That leaves more time for freshman Brett Hundley, who graduated from high school early so he could enroll at UCLA and take part in spring practice.

A University of Iowa investigative committee said the school should scrap an intense workout that left 13 football players hospitalized, conceding that whatever triggered their injuries remains a mystery.

The five-member panel’s report clears the players, trainers and coaches of any wrongdoing, saying similar workouts have been done in the past without any injuries.

The January workout, however, led to the 13 football players’ receiving a diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis, which breaks down muscle cells and discolors urine.

All the players were treated and none show any lasting effects.

Aguirre is in stable condition

Former Dallas Mavericks star Mark Aguirre was hospitalized after falling ill at a Plano, Texas, athletic club, but reports that he had a heart attack were inaccurate, former Mavericks general manager Frank Zaccanelli said.

Aguirre apparently had a circulation problem while he was working out on a treadmill, according to Zaccanelli, who remains a close friend of Aguirre’s.

“There was no heart attack,” Zaccanelli said. “What it was, it was a clogged vessel — not artery, vessel — and while he was working out it just caused him to black out. There was no cardiac arrest, there was nothing. He fell.”

Zaccanelli said that Aguirre had a catheterization done and is in stable condition, not critical.

Arizona State outfielder Cory Hahn, who suffered a serious neck injury last month while sliding into second base, made an appearance in a wheelchair Tuesday at Cal State Fullerton, where the Titans played Arizona State, according to Arizona State spokesman Mark Brand.

Hahn, a former Santa Ana Mater Dei standout, has been recuperating at a facility closer to his home since the injury.

Mater Dei Coach Burt Call said he has spoken with Hahn.

“He’s very upbeat,” Call said.

Hahn’s family has not released any update on his condition since shortly after his injury.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love will not make the team’s upcoming two-game trip because of an injured left groin.

Love sat out his second practice in a row Wednesday, and the team says he will stay home to rest.

The Timberwolves play at Dallas on Thursday and at Oklahoma City on Friday.

He is averaging 20.3 points and a league-leading 15.4 rebounds this season.
