Dan Haren will be skipped in Angels rotation but won’t lose spot

Dan Haren will be skipped in the rotation in Boston next week, but the struggling right-hander will not be removed from the rotation completely.

Manager Mike Scioscia said Friday that Haren, who was tagged for 10 earned runs and 12 hits in seven innings of his last two starts, both losses, will pitch Aug. 25 in Detroit.

Ervin Santana, Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson will start against the Red Sox in a three-game series that begins Tuesday, and Zack Greinke will start the opener of a three-game series in Detroit next Friday.

Haren, meanwhile, will throw several bullpen sessions in hopes of finding a better release point and ironing out some mechanical problems that arose when he tried to pitch through lower-back stiffness that eventually sent him to the disabled list for the first time in his career in July.

“I think his arm slot has changed slightly, and he wants to get it back to where it needs to be,” Scioscia said. “I think he’s past his physical ailment. This is a mechanical thing that might have arisen from trying to make adjustments in his delivery so he could make pitches without his back bothering him.”
