Phillies get Michael Young from the Rangers

A person familiar with the trade said the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired seven-time All-Star infielder Michael Young from the Texas Rangers for two relief pitchers.

Young agreed to waive his no-trade clause on Saturday, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced. The Phillies are sending right-hander Josh Lindblom and minor league righty Lisalverto Bonilla to the Rangers to get Young, who fills a void at third base. The Rangers also will pay a significant portion of Young’s salary for 2013. Young is due to earn $16 million. Reports say the Phillies will pay him about $6 million.

Lindsey Vonn, swears, wins

Lindsey Vonn won a World Cup Super-G at St. Moritz, Switizerland, to stay unbeaten in four speed races this season. American teammate Julia Mancuso finished third.

Vonn timed 1 minute 2.71 seconds to beat World Cup overall leader Tina Maze by 0.37 of a second. Mancuso was 1.01 behind the winner.

Vonn’s 57th career World Cup win, the second-most in history, was her 20th in Super-G. She is the four-time defending champion in the event.

The 28-year-old American’s celebration after crossing the finish line provoked some debate. Vonn acknowledged she used a curse word in a release of emotion in taking the lead — but had not directed it at Maze, as her coaches had alleged.

“They think I said something very bad about her when I came to the finish and that is absolutely not true,” Vonn said. “I swore and I shouldn’t have done that.”

Henderson beats Diaz to retain UFC title

Benson Henderson retained the UFC lightweight championship in his hometown of Seattle during UFC on Fox, unanimously outpointing a flustered Nate Diaz.

Prior to the main event, rising Canadian star Rory MacDonald took apart former champion B.J. Penn in a unanimous decision that left Penn’s face bloodied.

Swedish lightweight Alexander Gustafsson won a unanimous decision over former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Donald Fehr thought an NHL deal was ‘very close’

Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHL Players’ Assn., said Saturday he thought the union was “very close” to a labor deal with the NHL before it was rebuffed on Thursday, when the league halted three days of meetings. Despite the abrupt ending, Fehr said he still believes the sides are closer than they were a week ago to resolving the dispute that has so far wiped out games through Dec. 14.

The sides haven’t had formal conversations since Thursday, and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said Saturday nothing has been scheduled. Fehr, after speaking at a gathering of the Canadian Auto Workers Council, said he is prepared to restart negotiations with his NHL counterparts. “If they’re willing. It’s up to them,” Fehr said. “They’re the ones who called a halt to the process.”

Kenny Perry and Sean O’Hair took a two-stroke lead in the Franklin Templeton Shootout at Naples, Fla., on Saturday, birdieing the final six holes in better-ball play for an 11-under 61.

“We got pretty hot,” O’Hair said. “Kenny did a great job when I wasn’t in the hole … then I did a pretty good job when Kenny wasn’t in the hole.”

Perry and O’Hair were 19 under overall, two strokes ahead of first-round leaders Davis Love III and Brandt Snedeker at Tiburon Golf Club. Love and Snedeker had a 65.

Shanshan Feng of China won the Dubai Ladies Masters by five strokes after shooting a three-under 69 to capture her second Ladies European Tour title.

The sixth-ranked Feng had an eagle, two birdies and a bogey to total 21-under 267 at Emirates Golf Club.

Dewi Claire Schreefel of the Netherlands (69) was next. Caroline Masson of Germany (71) and Becky Brewerton of Wales (65) were nine strokes behind the leader.

Morten Orum Madsen made a late charge to match Tim Clark’s five-under 60 and grab a share of the first-round lead at the European Tour’s rain-delayed season-opening Nelson Mandela Championship at Durban, South Africa.

Overnight leader Charl Schwartzel of South Africa had a four-under 68 to extend his lead over Daniel Chopra of Sweden to five shots after the third round of the Thailand Golf Championship.

Pure Fun rallied in the final quarter of a mile to win the $500,000 Hollywood Starlet by a length at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Pure Fun ran 11/16 miles on Cushion Track in 1:44.65 and paid $14.40, $6 and $10.60 at 6-1 odds. The 2-year-old chestnut filly was supplemented late to the race for $20,000 and earned her first Grade 1 win.

It was Pure Fun’s first start outside Kentucky and her first on a synthetic surface. Trained by Ken McPeek, the filly trailed all seven of her rivals approaching the stretch. Pure Fun quickly made up ground and collared pacesetter Blonde Fog with a sixteenth of a mile to go.

Blonde Fog returned $6 and $9.40. Scarlet Strike was another two lengths back in third and paid $19.
