Miracle shot buzzer beater for Cal Poly Pomona

Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night couldn’t have scripted a more dramatic way to end its men’s college basketball regular season, using a three-quarters-court shot as time expired to win.

The Broncos went into double overtime to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 60-58, in a game that Dominguez Hills seemed to have in hand.

Pomona’s Mitchel Anderson, however, had other ideas.

Dominguez Hills sent the game into overtime when Robert Willhite sank a three-pointer to tie the score, 48-48.

The teams were scoreless in the first overtime.

In the second overtime, DeRonn Scott put Pomona up by two points with a three-pointer with 8.7 seconds to play. Again, Willhite answered, with a three-pointer from the top of the key with 0.6 seconds remaining. Cue Anderson.

Pomona was out of timeouts. Anderson took the inbounds pass, and from three-quarters of the court away, let go with a heave that dropped through the hoop for the victory.

Cal Poly Pomona finished the regular season at 18-7 and 15-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., a game behind first place Chico State. Pomona will play Cal State Stanislaus on Tuesday in the first round of the conference tournament.
