Clippers sign Bobby Simmons to another 10-day contract

The Clippers have signed forward Bobby Simmons to a second 10-day contract, the team announced Friday.

Simmons has averaged 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds in six games with the team while playing backup to Caron Butler. He’s also shot well from the three-point-line, making seven of his 16 attempts.

Simmons was called up from the D-League and was offered his initial 10-day contract on Feb. 27 after averaging 13.5 points and 7.6 rebounds in 21 games with the Reno Bighorns.

Simmons is a nine-year NBA veteran who played for the Clippers for two seasons (2003-05).

His most productive year in the league was with the Clippers during the 2004-05 season, when he averaged career highs of 16.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He won the Most Improved Player Award that season.

After Simmons’ second contract expires, the Clippers will have to sign him for the rest of the season or release him.

“I think Bobby has done a really good job for us,” Coach Vinny Del Negro said Wednesday. “He’s been very professional. He’s done everything that we’ve asked. It’s not surprising. He’s a quality person, quality player. We’re just fortunate to have him.”

The Clippers play San Antonio today at 5:30 p.m. PST in their final game of a six-game trip.
