UCLA offensive line gets needed rest

UCLA's off week gives the Bruins a chance to heal their offensive line.

That will probably have tackles Torian White and Simon Goines ready for Arizona State on Oct. 27, but guard Greg Capella remains iffy at best.

White, the Bruins' starting left tackle, underwent a procedure Tuesday to correct a heart rhythm issue. He will sit out practice this week.

"Torian will be fine for the Arizona State game," Coach Jim Mora said. "He will be back out practicing next week."

White learned of the health issue during training camp in August. He sat out several days because of chest pains, and tests revealed a minor problem.

It is not expected to affect White in the future.

Goines was in pads at practice Tuesday, but Mora said the tackle worked out only on the stationary bicycle. Goines injured his left knee against Utah on Saturday. Goines had an MRI exam.

"They didn't find anything serious enough to keep him out," Mora said. "He might get some work in tomorrow, but that remains to be seen."

Capella is unlikely to play against Arizona State because of a concussion. He sat out the last four games. Capella also suffered a concussion during training camp.

"He is still struggling," Mora said. "They have done the impact testing and he is still symptomatic a certain degree. Given his history, we want to make sure he is beyond OK before we put him back out there. I would be surprised if it wasn't a few more weeks."

Fuller brush-up

The time off gives freshman Devin Fuller a chance to get up to speed at receiver. He shifted from quarterback two weeks ago but has yet to make a reception.

"He's a natural catcher," Mora said. "It's more getting the right release when he has bump-and-run, reading the coverage, knowing where the holes are going to be, understanding how to set up a guy playing man to man. All the intricacies of the position."

UCLA is thin at receiver, although Jerry Johnson (ribs) is expected to play against Arizona State.

Busy Bruin

Quarterback Brett Hundley has this weekend to rest but will have a full schedule next week.

Hundley will lead UCLA against Arizona State, then come home to participate in the Epilepsy Foundation of Los Angeles' 5K run/walk Oct. 28. Hundley's sister, Paris, suffers from epilepsy.

The walk will be held at the Rose Bowl beginning at 7:30 a.m. For information: (800) 564-0445.
