Serena Williams dispatches Ana Ivanovic, moves to U.S. Open semis
NEW YORK -- Serena Williams, who said she got teary-eyed as she watched Andy Roddick finish his last-ever tennis match, composed herself quickly. Williams, seeded fourth, beat 12th-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, 6-1, 6-3, Wednesday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Williams will play 10th-seeded Sara Errani in Friday’s semifinals. Third-seeded Maria Sharapova will face top-seeded Victoria Azarenka in the other women’s semifinal.
This was Williams’ 64th career win at the U.S. Open. She’s aiming for her fourth title in New York and she beat Ivanovic with the help of 12 aces. Williams has 423 aces this season, the most of any woman on the WTA Tour.
It took her 58 minutes to advance to the semifinals.
“I think I came out really strong,” Williams said. “I didn’t start out this tournament really strong but I wanted to play my best tennis later.”
Williams said she was emotional after Roddick’s loss. “I was rooting so hard for Andy,” Williams said. “I’ve known him since I was 8 years old. I wish him the best.”
