Connecticut men’s basketball Coach Jim Calhoun is retiring and plans to announce his decision Thursday, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made public.

Assistant coach Kevin Ollie was expected to replace Calhoun, the person said.

Calhoun led the Connecticut program from obscurity to three national championships but has struggled recently with health issues, including a fractured hip last month.

The 70-year-old Calhoun won 873 games in 40 years as a head coach, first at Northeastern and the last 26 years at Connecticut.

Maurice Jones, the USC men’s basketball team’s leading returning scorer from last season, is looking to transfer, the point guard announced via his Twitter account.

The junior was going to sit out the upcoming season because he was academically ineligible, but Jones was expected to return the following season.

Jones, who averaged a team-high 13 points last season when USC finished 6-26, could not be reached for comment.

Although Jones is leaving, the Trojans are getting another player.

Oraby, a junior who is from Egypt, is scheduled to begin taking classes Monday and the Trojans plan to file a hardship waiver with the NCAA that could make him eligible to play this season.

Oraby, 21, averaged six points and 3.6 rebounds last season and set a Rice record with 56 blocks.

Gaines is target of complaints

The California Horse Racing Board has filed two complaints against trainer Carla Gaines after two horses from her barn had urine samples that contained testosterone in excess of authorized levels. A Little Luckier and Winding Way are the horses involved. Winding Way won the fourth race at Del Mar on July 21. A Little Luckier finished second at Hollywood Park on July 14.

It is considered a Class 3 violation and could result in disqualification of the horses and punishment against Gaines. A hearing has yet to be scheduled.

An arbitrator upheld the Ducks’ trade of defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky to the New York Islanders for a second-round pick in the 2013 entry draft. Visnovsky had contended that his no-trade clause was still valid even though he had waived it in 2010 to accept a trade from Edmonton to the Ducks.

The Kings signed defenseman Kurtis MacDermid to a three-year, entry-level deal. MacDermid split last season between the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League and the junior B-level Owen Sound Greys of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. He also participated in the Kings’ development camp in July.
