Ducks’ Ryan Getzlaf is a game-time decision tonight against Edmonton

Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf participated in the team’s morning skate Monday and said afterward his ability to play in Monday night’s game against Edmonton at Honda Center will be a game-time decision.

“It felt good, it responded the way we wanted,” Getzlaf said of his undisclosed injury to his right leg. “There’s a lot of time,” between Monday morning “and the game to see how it reacts.”

Getzlaf, leading the Ducks (26-8-5) with 13 goals and 30 assists, was pulled from Wednesday’s victory over Dallas after scoring a third-period goal.

He missed the team’s Friday loss to the Stars and Sunday’s shootout victory over the Kings, when first-line mate Corey Perry scored regulation and provided the clinching shootout goal.

“It was terrible” to miss, Getzlaf said. “Coming out with a win made it easier, but I definitely want to be out there.”

That victory over the Kings expanded the Ducks’ Pacific Division lead over the defending Stanley Cup champions to nine points with nine games remaining, however, and that comfort might sway the team to let Getzlaf rest until Wednesday’s home game against Colorado.

“Game-time decision and leave it at that,” Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said after practice.

Getzlaf said while he wants “to play every chance I get, it’s more about when it’s ready to heal. I don’t want to damage it more or prolong” another absence with the NHL playoffs coming at month’s end.

Boudreau praised his team’s character after getting out-shot by the Kings on Sunday, saying the Ducks “gutted it out” and rallied back to score each time the Kings tied the game.

The coach said he’s discussed with his players the importance of avoiding a letdown against the Oilers (16-15-7) following the four consecutive losses that came after their emotional March 20 victory over Chicago.

“We discussed not letting the same thing happen after we won in Chicago,” March 29, “and since then we’re” 3-1-1, “so they’re getting the message across. As to whether it works tonight, we’ll see how we fare.”
