Angels bundle up for game against Twins; Alberto Callaspo to miss series

MINNEAPOLIS — Angels outfielder Mike Trout headed out for batting practice at Target Field on Monday wearing a red ski-mask-like pullover on his head and face that made him look like Spiderman. Several teammates wore hats with ear flaps and heavy hooded sweatshirts.

There are still snow drifts around the city, and the forecast for Monday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins calls for a temperature of 39 degrees. But a bigger problem than the cold might be wind gusts of up to 25 mph, which will make it feel like 28 degrees.

“It’s not ideal to play when it’s windy,” said Peter Bourjos, who will start in center field. “You have to be on your toes. You can’t drift on balls. At least we had some windy days during spring training in Arizona, so you can get used to it.”

There will be great incentive for both teams to have quick defensive innings. The dugout benches are heated, and there are also heat blowers in each dugout.

“I’ve always found that the wind-chill can make things a lot worse,” designated hitter Mark Trumbo said. “It can make somewhat bearable conditions rough.”

The Angels will play the three-game series against the Twins without third baseman Alberto Callaspo, who injured his right calf Thursday night. Manager Mike Scioscia said a decision will be made Thursday or Friday whether to put Callaspo on the 15-day disabled list.

Callaspo took ground balls for the first time Monday and began hitting over the weekend. He has not begun jogging.

“It’s still tight, but it’s feeling better,” Callaspo said through a translator. “It doesn’t hurt hitting from either side of the plate. It just hurts fielding grounders.”

Shortstop Erick Aybar, on the DL because of a left-heel bruise, did not accompany the team to Minnesota. Instead, he went to Arizona to continue his therapy.
