U.S. Open tennis: Arthur Ashe Stadium to finally get a roof
A retractable roof will be built over Arthur Ashe Stadium, the 22,000-seat main court at the U.S. Open, according to a report Wednesday in the New York Post.
The United States Tennis Assn., which runs the U.S. Open, plans a news conference for Thursday to make the announcement, the newspaper reported.
The USTA also said it would release design plans for the makeover of the entire Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Over the last five years, even as the Open has been plagued by rain which has delayed both the men’s and women’s finals, USTA officials have said it would not be cost-effective to build a roof over the massive Ashe Stadium.
The plans will also call for two new courts and a viewing plaza for fans. The roof over Ashe Stadium would be five times larger than the roof over Wimbledon’s Centre Court.
