Michael Vick stays in Philadelphia, with pay cut

Michael Vick took a significant pay cut to stay with the Philadelphia Eagles and compete for a starting job.

The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback agreed Monday to a restructured three-year contract with the Eagles, only two seasons after signing a $100-million extension that included $35.5 million in guaranteed money. The new deal is essentially for one year, however.

A person familiar with the contract said Vick could earn up to $10 million in 2013 if he meets all of his performance incentives, and the team will void the remaining two years on March 15. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms haven’t been released.

Vick had been set to earn about $16 million next season, including a $3-million roster bonus. He lost his starting job to rookie Nick Foles last season, but new Coach Chip Kelly will give him a chance to win it back.

“I am grateful and proud to be a Philadelphia Eagle,” Vick wrote on Twitter. “My heart is in Philly and this community is important to me.”

Utah hires Erickson as assistant coach

Utah’s football program hired Dennis Erickson as co-offensive coordinator.

The 65-year-old Erickson will share the coordinator title with 26-year-old Brian Johnson, a former Utah quarterback.

Erickson won national titles in 1989 and 1991 as coach at Miami. He has been a head coach at six universities — three of them Pac-12 Conference schools.

He is a three-time Pac-12 coach of the year, most recently with Arizona State in 2007, when he led the Sun Devils to a share of the conference title in his first season.

Nike co-founder Phil Knight issued a statement blasting the Freeh report’s characterization of Penn State coach Joe Paterno in the child sex abuse scandal involving assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Following the release last year of former FBI director Louis Freeh’s report, Knight issued a statement saying he was saddened that Paterno apparently made missteps that led to “heartbreaking consequences.”

But Knight now says that he may have jumped to conclusions, after a new report by former U.S. Atty. Gen. and Pennsylvania Gov. Dick Thornburgh that was commissioned by the Paterno family. In a statement released Monday, Knight called the findings of the Freeh report unjustified and unsubstantiated.

USC backup forward Ari Stewart suffered a broken left hand in Sunday’s 71-60 basketball win over Washington and will miss up to three weeks, the school said.

Stewart, a 6-foot-7 redshirt junior, hadn’t played at all in the last five games coached by Kevin O’Neill but under interim Coach Bob Cantu, Stewart was becoming a regular part of the rotation. Stewart averages 3.6 points per game. He is in his first year at USC after transferring from Wake Forest.

Ligety wins his second gold medal

American Ted Ligety won his second gold medal in the world Alpine skiing championships at Schladming, Austria.

Ligety captured the super-combined title with a superb downhill and an even more impressive night slalom run under the lights on the icy Planai course, for a two-run time of 2 minutes 56.96 seconds.

Ivica Kostelic of Croatia finished second, a distant 1.15 seconds behind, and Romed Baumann of host Austria took the bronze medal, 1.17 back, after leading the downhill leg.

Dutch wild-card entry Igor Sijsling beat eighth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4, in the first round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament at Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Sijsling used a powerful serve-and-volley game to beat the third-seeded Tsonga.

Former top-ranked players Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic eased into the second round of the Qatar Open at Doha with straight-set victories.

Tenth-ranked Wozniacki beat qualifier Mervana Jugic-Salkic, 6-1, 6-2. Ivanovic, ranked 13th, beat Tamira Paszek, 6-1, 6-2.
