Watch Serena Williams bust her own lip at Australian Open

Serena Williams was already playing on an ankle that she had rolled in an earlier round of the Australian Open. Then she smacked herself in the face with her racket during Thursday’s action in Melbourne.

Like Chris Farley said in Tommy Boy: Could’ve done without that.

Still, even a swollen lip couldn’t slow Williams, who cruised past Garbine Muguruza, 6-2, 6-0.

“It’s OK. It’s a war wound,” Williams said. “I think it happens to everyone, but I have never busted it wide open like that. So, yeah, I was like, ‘Oh, no. I can’t have a tooth fall out.’ That would be horrible.”

The latest mishap may have actually distracted her from the ankle injury that hobbled her during the first round.

“Obviously when you go out to play you’re heavy on adrenaline and you’re really pumped up,” Williams said. “Usually I feel injuries after the match, but so far, so good. I felt pretty, much better than I ever dreamed of expecting to feel.”

Neither injury seemed to give her any trouble later in the day, when she combined with sister Venus for a first-round doubles victory.

“I’m on the up and up, I feel. It can only get better from here,” Williams said, surely setting herself for an even more bizarre incident during her third-round match on Saturday.
