Arizona State beats Stanford, 89-88, in overtime

LAS VEGAS — The Pac-12 Conference men’s basketball tournament started with an overtime game Wednesday at its new site, the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Ninth-seeded Arizona State beat eighth-seeded Stanford, 89-88, to earn a spot Thursday at noon against top-seeded UCLA.

The Sun Devils (21-11) regrouped after Stanford (18-14) used a 7-2 run in the final 1 minute 3 seconds of regulation to tie the score. Guard Aaron Bright tied a Cardinal record with six three-point baskets. On his last one, with 41 seconds to play in regulation, he was fouled and made the free throw to tie the score, 79-79.

But in the extra period, Arizona State freshman Jahii Carson made a three-pointer with 2:09 left that gave the Sun Devils the lead for good.

Bright finished with 27 points and Carson had 34.

Colorado 74, Oregon State 68: Colorado won four games in four days to become the surprise winner of this tournament last year. After a strong performance on defense in the second half against Oregon State, they have three more to go this season.

Oregon State dimmed Colorado’s NCAA tournament hopes by defeating the Buffaloes in a regular-season game last week, but the Beavers on Wednesday made only seven of 25 three-point shots and gave up 17 offensive rebounds that resulted in 18 Colorado points.

Guard Spencer Dinwiddie led the fifth-seeded Buffaloes (21-10) with 20 points. Colorado will play fourth-seeded Arizona at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Washington 64, Washington State 62: Scott Suggs scored 19 points and the sixth-seeded Huskies (13-18), who blew a 15-point lead with 81/2 minutes to play, held off a furious rally by the Cougars (17-15).

Brock Motum had 28 points for Washington State.
