Mark Trumbo, Peter Bourjos not in Angels’ lineup against Tigers

DETROIT — Neither struggling cleanup batter Mark Trumbo nor injured center fielder Peter Bourjos is in the Angels’ lineup for Thursday’s series finale against the Detroit Tigers in Comerica Park.

Trumbo leads the team with 17 home runs and ranks second with 50 runs batted in, but he’s batting .130 (six for 46) with two homers, five RBIs, 12 strikeouts and four walks in 11 games since June 15, his average falling from .270 to .249, and he’s hitting .048 (one for 21) in his last five games.

“I don’t know if it’s a timing issue, but he doesn’t look as comfortable in the batter’s box as he did before,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “We need him to get back on board, and he will. He’s having a good year, he’s been productive. He’s just hit a little bit of a dry spell.”

Howie Kendrick, who leads the team with a .321 average, will bat cleanup today. Scioscia said Trumbo would return to the lineup Friday in Houston but hedged when asked if it would be in the cleanup spot.

“We’ll see where are, but there are no imminent plans to move him out of the middle of the lineup,” Scioscia said. “As we move forward and get some options with Howie swinging well, hopefully Josh [Hamilton] swinging well, it can take a little pressure off Mark to hit in that spot.”

Bourjos, who bruised his left thumb sliding into second base against Pittsburgh on Sunday, did not start for the third straight game. He was unable to hit Wednesday but said the swelling went down considerably Thursday. He remains hopeful of playing this weekend.

The Angels also made a roster move before Thursday’s game, placing pitcher Tommy Hanson on the 15-day disabled list because of right forearm tightness and recalling left-hander Michael Roth from double-A Arkansas.
