Gary Carter receives touching tribute from Montreal Canadiens
The late Gary Carter, who died last week at the age of 57, was an icon in Montreal. A longtime catcher for the Montreal Expos, he was beloved in the city.
Unfortunately, there is no pro baseball team in Montreal anymore, with the Expos moving Washington, D.C., to become the Nationals before the 2005 season.
Carter’s number had been retired by the Expos before the team moved, however, and with no baseball team in town anymore, the banner with his number was moved to the home of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens, the Bell Center.
Carter was also the first person to wear an Expos cap on his plaque when he was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame.
Before the Canadiens’ game Sunday against New Jersey, they had a touching tribute to the catcher.
And to make it better, the Canadiens wore a patch with the No. 8, Carter’s number during his career, on it during the game. A classy way to celebrate a legendary Montreal athlete, even though his team is no longer there.
