Keenan Allen on Richard Sherman: ‘He’s not really a shutdown corner’

Richard Sherman may feel like he’s “the best corner in the game,” as the Seattle defensive back memorably declared after the NFC championship back in January, but San Diego receiver Keenan Allen isn’t impressed.

Not after the Chargers’ 30-21 victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks on Sunday, during which Allen made five catches for 55 yards, some of which came while being defended by Sherman.

“He’s just a normal guy,” Allen said of Sherman. “We can go at him. We took some shots at him. We are not going to shy away from him.

“He’s not really a shutdown corner. We definitely wanted to come out and show we could go any way we wanted to and that we were in control of the game. Wherever we wanted to go with it we were going to go with it.”

Fellow Chargers receiver Malcolm Floyd added, “Keenan was lighting up Sherman.’’

While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, Allen did get at least three catches for 31 yards directly against Sherman. It’s more than any Green Bay receiver got the previous week as Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t throw Sherman’s way the entire game.

Perhaps the Chargers’ more impressive accomplishment was silencing Sherman, who uncharacteristically refused to talk to reporters after the game.

But after hearing the San Diego players were claiming they had exposed him during the game, Sherman couldn’t help but take to Twitter and try to clear up the matter.

“Lmao Exposed? .... Complete 3 passes 0 touchdowns 0 explosive passes.... These guys make me laugh,” tweeted Sherman, who finished with six tackles, all solo.
