Mater Dei graduate Katin Reinhardt to transfer to USC from UNLV

Andy Enfield, USC’s new basketball coach, got good news over the Memorial Day weekend: Katin Reinhardt of Dana Point, who played in high school at Mater Dei, said he was coming to USC from UNLV.

Reinhardt averaged 10.1 points for the Rebels, fourth-best on the NCAA team.

UNLV Coach Dave Rice told Las Vegas media that Reinhardt “said he feels his best opportunity to play in the NBA is to play more minutes at the point guard position. Katin would have had an opportunity for minutes at the point, but I’ve never guaranteed anyone they will start or play a certain number of minutes.”

Last season, Reinhardt played more on the perimeter and was the Rebels’ go-to shooter.

USC needs a point guard after the graduation of Jio Fontan. The only one on the roster now is sophomore-to-be Chass Bryan, who was a walk-on for the Trojans last year.

And maybe this is only coincidence, but Reinhardt’s alma mater, Mater Dei, has the 12th-ranked prospect in the nation coming out next year -- 6-foot-5 wing player Stanley Johnson.

According to NCAA rules, Reinhardt will have to sit out next season unless he would petition to play immediately under hardship rules. Under those rules, the NCAA will allow a player to leave a school and not sit out if there are extenuating circumstances, such as a sick relative or another reason the player’s family would need him or her closer.

There has been no indication that Reinhardt has made such a petition.

He will have three years of eligibility at USC.
