The Mustangs have won 19 consecutive league titles, as well as 12 Southern Section divisional championships and three state titles.

The Mustangs (7-3), ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation last month, dropped a nonleague match to Huntington Beach Edison last week to fall from No. 6 to No. 28 nationally according to prepvolleyball.com. Mira Costa’s other loss came in pool play in the Las Vegas (Nev.) Durango tournament, which the Mustangs still went on to win last month. Mira Costa had actually beaten South Torrance in a best-of-three-sets match in the first round of bracket play in that tournament. Mira Costa sophomore outside hitter Alix Klineman had a team-high 15 kills in Tuesday’s match, but South Torrance defensive specialist Emily Yamate had 10 digs to spark a stalwart defensive effort in which the Spartans (11-5, 1-0) combined for 60 digs despite playing just three games.
