Attack on high school football referee in Texas generates calls for respect
What appeared to be an intentional attack against an official during a high school football game in Texas last week that was captured on video is causing high school sports administrators around the country to remind coaches, players and parents about the importance of treating officials with respect.
“That was horrible. That was a worst-case scenario,” said John Aguirre, commissioner of the Los Angeles City Section.
Two defensive football players from San Antonio John Jay High School blindsided a back judge, one running into him at full speed from behind and another diving into him while he was on the ground. Police and district officials are investigating.
Aguirre, a former football coach, said he intends to send out an email to coaches. “The respect for officials needs to be emphasized throughout the country at every level,” he said.
Aguirra said poor treatment from fans and others has sometimes made it difficult for officials associations to attract people wanting to officiate.
In a statement, Illinois High School Assn. Director of Officials Craig Anderson said, “Ultimately, officials will not get every call right, but they must be respected by all student-athletes, coaches and fans. I would call upon all coaches to speak with their student-athletes regarding the respect we owe our working officials. There are many life lessons to be learned through educational-based athletics. Let’s make this a teachable moment for the students we serve.”
MySanAntonio.com is reporting that an assistant coach has been placed on paid administrative leave.
