Nine days after breaking the Orange County record in the 100-meter dash, Santa Ana Mater Dei sprinter Curtis Godin made more history Saturday night at the Arcadia Invitational, running the event in a state-best 10.36 seconds.

Godin’s 100 time was the third-fastest in the country this season and equaled the meet record set by Jamere Holland of Woodland Hills Taft in 2006. The UCLA-bound senior, who ran the 200 in a wind-aided 21.11 (fastest in the state) at the West Coast Relays a week earlier, clocked 21.03 in the race Saturday, finishing second to Paul Lucas of Mountain Pointe, Ariz., who clocked a national-best 20.84. He also ran the first leg of the Monarchs’ 400-meter relay, which finished third.

Gardena Serra senior Adoree Jackson leaped 25 feet, 1/2 inch to win the Invitational long jump and top his 24-06.50 mark at Arcadia last year, and Carl Johansson of Orange Lutheran cleared a personal-best 16-08 to take first in the pole vault.

Misana Viltz of Long Beach Millikan won the 110-meter high hurdles in 13.92, the second-fastest time in the nation this season, to edge defending state champion Marquis Morris of Concord De La Salle. National leader Bayron Manuel of Long Beach Wilson was third in 14.18. In the 300-meter low hurdles, state leader Justin Collins of Carson finished sixth in 38.91.

Los Angeles Loyola’s 400-meter relay team of Aaron Gomez, Nico Evans, Kyle Oden and Mekai Sheffie got the night session off to a rousing start, winning in 41.61 when Sheffie leaned forward at the finish to clip Fresno Edison’s Charles Wheeler, who began the anchor leg with a slight lead.

“The key to the race was our exchanges,” said Evans. “Our coach told us they needed to be clean, like one fluid motion.”

On the girls side, there was no stopping defending 100 and 200 state champion Ariana Washington of Long Beach Poly, who won Saturday’s 100 Invitational race in a wind-aided 11.38 (the second-fastest in the nation under any conditions this season). Washington also anchored the Jackrabbits’ third-place 400-meter relay.

“My main focus [in the 100] was my start,” said Washington, who was first out of the blocks and finished 0.26 ahead of runner-up Destiny Smith-Barnett from Oakland Skyline. “My goal was 11.38 and I reached my goal tonight, so I’m happy.”

Defending state champion Kaitlyn Merritt of Santa Margarita repeated as pole vault champion with a height of 13-06. Dos Pueblos senior Stamatia Scarvelis broke the meet shotput record with a throw of 52-01.25 and won the discus with a distance of 172-07.
