Churchill Downs was named Monday as the host of the 2018 Breeders’ Cup. It will break a two-year stretch in which Southern California has hosted horse racing’s all ages premier event. Santa Anita will hold the two days of racing this year, and Del Mar will do the same next year.

The historic Louisville, Ky., racetrack has recently undergone nearly $70 million in enhancements to a facility that was showing its age. Most of the improvements have been in the turf club and clubhouse, allowing the track to sell more premium -- in other words expensive -- seating.

It will be the ninth time that Churchill Downs has played host to the Breeders’ Cup, which will tie it with Santa Anita.

Louisville’s average high temperature in November is 58, with an average low of 40. Los Angeles averages a high of 71 in that month, with a low of 55.

It will be the 35th time the Breeders’ Cup has been held. The dates are Nov. 2 and 3, 2018. It will be televised by NBC.
