Clippers’ Chris Paul stays on court after game to shoot

After playing 38 minutes in Wednesday’s 111-98 win over the Golden State Warriors, Chris Paul stayed on the court as his teammates retreated to the locker room.

Paul was not happy with his shooting performance, so he decided to stage an impromptu practice despite having just beaten one of the team’s rivals.

“For him to go do that, it shows you how hungry he is,” Blake Griffin said of Paul.

Paul, who is averaging 46% from the field this season, went five-for-15 on Wednesday, finishing with 16 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds. He didn’t speak to reporters until 11:10 p.m., nearly an hour after the game finished

“I don’t want to read too much into it, I think I just need to do better,” Paul said. “Obviously we’re winning and stuff like that, but everybody has to do their part, and I want to do mine.”

Paul’s struggles from the field, however, did not discourage him from continuing to shoot. In fact, in the final moments of the third quarter, with the Clippers leading by only two points, Paul wanted the ball in his hands.

“Doc [Rivers] was like, ‘I’m going to get you out, get you out so I can get you some rest, this might be your only rest,’” Paul said. “I said, ‘No coach, leave me in, I need to make a shot.’”

Paul then made a three pointer with 0.1 seconds left.

The All-Star point guard said he hopes that his postgame practice helps the team continue its winning streak, which now is at nine consecutive games.

“Sometimes you struggle with confidence and things like that,” Paul said. “So I wanted to go shoot now.”
