Sports DIGEST : Three Area Players Accept Scholarships to Play Football

Three football players who played at San Fernando Valley area high schools have announced they have accepted scholarship offers.

Steve Souza, Tracy Anderson and Mike Phillips, have accepted offers to play at Division I universities next fall. All three played at Glendale College last season.

Souza, the Western State Conference Player of the Year, will attend Iowa State. The 5-10, 190-pound running back from Chatsworth High, rushed for 1,202 and 12 touchdowns on 243 carries, caught 11 passes for 122 yards and two TDs, and returned 36 kickoffs for 727 yards last fall.

Anderson, a 6-2, 220-pound all-state linebacker from Sylmar High, will attend Fresno State.

Phillips, a 5-5, 155-pound wide receiver from Kennedy High, signed with the University of Pacific. He had 22 catches for Glendale. Some High School Soccer Notes

The Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks High School soccer teams are ranked in the Top 20 of the Southern California High School Soccer Coaches Assn. soccer poll.

Simi Valley is ranked 13th while Thousand Oaks is 19th.

The two teams will battle for the Marmonte League championship. Simi Valley beat Royal Wednesday for its fourth straight league win this season. Overall the Pioneers are 7-3-3. Thousand Oaks is 4-2-2.

Simi Valley’s Dean Freeman is averaging almost a goal a game. He had 11 in his team’s first 12 games.

In a Tri-Valley League game Thursday, Oak Park beat Carpinteria, 3-0, to even its record for the season at 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the league. Chris Puorto scored in the first half. Scott Daley and Duane Hall added goals in the second half. Goalie Steve Frame had seven saves.

In a quarter-final game of the city playoffs Thursday, El Camino Real lost to Jefferson, 6-0. Jefferson will now meet Kennedy, which beat Bell on Wednesday. The winner will meet Grant in the final.
