Despite the absence of leading scorer John Colborne, top-ranked Poway High School remained unbeaten by defeating Orange Glen, 80-65, in a Palomar League game Friday at Orange Glen.

Colborne, who has been averaging 18.5 points per game for the Titans, was sidelined with an ankle injury. He watched as teammate Dominic Johnson scored a game-high 28 points to lead Poway to its fifth straight league victory. The Titans are 15-0 overall and 5-0 in league.

Orange Glen led, 12-9, at the end of the first period, but was outscored, 22-12, in the second. The Patriots spent the remainder of the game trying to catch up.

“We didn’t have Colborne, but our other kids filled in,” Poway Coach Neville Saner said. “We have six guys who can play good and hard.”

Saner said the play of Johnson, along with Jud Buechler and Gary Anderson, who scored 17 points, proved to be the difference.

“Anderson and Johnson did a good job of shooting from the perimeter, they helped keep the defense honest.”

Orange Glen (2-3, 5-7) was led by Cory Kelly, who scored 20 points, John Mitchell had 13, and Mark Anthony, 12.
