Orlando Cepeda Jr. worked his way inside for 15 second-half points to lead Burbank High to a 48-45 victory over visiting Hart High Friday night in a battle for first place in the Foothill League.

In ending Hart’s 16-game winning streak in the league, the Bulldogs improved to 4-0 in league play, 13-3 overall. The Indians fell to 3-1, 12-5 overall.

“Cepeda came through down the stretch,” Burbank Coach Russ Keith said. “He was super.”

Cepeda didn’t score in the first half, but came alive in the final 16 minutes when Hart forward Dirk Hare got into foul trouble.

Cepeda, and Burbank’s David Nielsen who scored 12 points, were able to penetrate the lane and score some easy baskets.

Kevin Honaker, the Indians’ 5-11 guard, scored 20 points to lead both teams. His final score of the first half was the highlight of the evening.

After a Burbank free throw with two seconds left in the second quarter, Honaker took a pass and lofted a shot from about 75 feet.

It hit nothing but net and Hart had a 20-18 halftime lead. For good measure, Honaker hit a half-court shot as time ran out in the game.

“This is definitely a big win for us,” Keith said. “We had to get them on our home court.”
