Reseda 75, Grant 61

Reseda earned a share of the Valley 3-A League title by defeating Grant on the Regents’ home court. Reseda jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter, increased their advantage to 15 at the half and led by 20 for most of the final two quarters.

Alan Gindlesperger led Reseda with 19 points, while Dexter Nickelson had 12 points. Jeff Johnson and Reggie White each scored 10 points. Ten Reseda players scored, as first-year Coach Dennis King substituted liberally.

Gene Damiano led Grant (0-9 in league and 1-15 overall) with 18 points, while Eric Wright had 13 points. Reseda (15-6 overall) and Granada Hills both finished with 9-1 records in league.

Van Nuys 109, Birmingham 59

Call it the countdown to the East Valley League championship.

Van Nuys High finished 10-0 with a home win over Birmingham as Anthony Cook scored 20 points, Damon Fredieu had 19, Mohammed Marhaba had 18, Jerry Dorsey had 17 and Maurice Idolor added 16.

First-year Wolves Coach Jeff Halpern was overjoyed. “This has been the most enjoyable year of my career. This is a real highlight.”

Keith Bryant scored 14 points and Howard Zuckerman aded 12 for Birmingham. The Braves fell to 4-6 in league. Van Nuys is 19-2 overall.

Polytechnic 87, Sylmar 67

Polytechnic High scored 58 points in the second half to overcome a one-point halftime deficit at home and defeat Sylmar.

Alex Ruzich, a 6-1 junior forward, scored 27 points, John Larson had 15, James Welsh had 11 and Mark Harkay added 10 for Poly.

Dave Donoho scored 27 points, Chris Davis had 14 and Wes Tanijiri had 11 for Sylmar. The Spartans fell to 2-8 in the East Valley League and 2-14 overall.

Poly finished 7-3 in league and 10-9 this season.

Taft 76, San Fernando 63

The Toreadors overcame a 10-point first-quarter deficit and outscored San Fernando, 42-30, in the second half to win easily at San Fernando.

Taft ended the regular season with a 7-12 record and finished fourth in the Valley 4-A League with a 4-6 mark. San Fernando finished at 6-13 and 2-8.

Darren Kolinsky led Taft with 21 points, while teammate Bobby Greene added 19.

For San Fernando, which squandered its big first-quarter lead by halftime, John Austin scored 22 points and Sean Declouet and Shelton Boykin scored 14 each.

Kennedy 77, Monroe 54

Kennedy wrapped up second place in the Valley 4-A League with an easy victory over visiting Monroe. The Golden Cougars (8-2 in league, 14-7 overall) raced out to a 20-11 lead after the first eight minutes.

Monroe (0-10 in league, 4-17 overall) scored just seven points in the second quarter and fell behind by 19 points at the half. Barry Thomas had 22 to lead the Vikings.

Kennedy was led by Titius Randle’s 18 points and Marcus Napper’s 15. James Walton and 14 points and Tony Dotson 13 for the Cougars, whose only losses in league came to champion Cleveland.
