Share

The Newbury Park High girls moved into a tie for second place with Simi Valley in the Marmonte League after beating the Pioneers, 56-49, at Newbury Park Wednesday night.

Should Newbury Park lose to Thousand Oaks Friday night, the Panthers will meet the Pioneers Saturday in a playoff to determine which advances to postseason play.

Newbury Park’s highly potent fast break will play a big part in the Panthers’ quest for the playoffs. Despite Simi Valley’s height advantage, the Panthers jumped to a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Senior forward Katie Potts hit Jennifer Tallungan three times on fast breaks in the opening quarter as Tallungan scored six of her game-high 17 points. Newbury Park’s offense was slowed some when Potts was knocked to the floor and had to leave the game as the first quarter ended.

While Potts was on the bench, Simi Valley chipped away at the Panther lead, closing to within three points with four minutes left in the half. Potts returned and dished off an assist to Vanessa Hornbuckle, who made a layup and drew a foul. Hornbuckle completed the three-point play to give Newbury Park a 25-19 lead at intermission.

The Pioneers moved to within two points in the third period after 5-9 senior Rachel Wilson hit a 15-foot jumper for two of her team-high 16 points. Simi Valley’s Julie Arlotto hit from 10 feet to tie the game, 31-31, with 3:05 left in the quarter.

“We were kind of sluggish in the third period,” Newbury Park Coach Nori Parvin said. “I don’t think we were trying to win as much as we were trying not to lose.
