Newbury Park’s Harvey twins put a double whammy on their opposition Friday night, advancing to the semifinals of the State wrestling meet at the Pacific.

Kevin and Keith, a pair of talented seniors, each rallied in their quarterfinal matches to pull out stunning victories.

Kevin, wrestling in the 112-pound division, trailed Kenny Utz of Turlock, 6-4, with less than a minute remaining. Kevin glanced at the clock, then made a brilliant move to score a reversal. Then he scored a two-point near fall to close out Utz with an 8-6 victory.

“I knew I had to get to work,” said Kevin, who finished fourth in State last year and is currently 41-5. “I made a quick move, and it turned out better than I thought it would.”

The victory was shocking since Utz had won two early matches, 20-1 and 21-1.

By the luck of the draw Keith was wrestling almost simultaneously at 119. Keith, who finished sixth in State last year, is 43-1 after scoring a win by default over Mickey Santiago of Oceana. The match went to overtime before Santiago was forced to withdraw with a knee injury.

“That’s what it comes down to at the end, when you get to overtime,” Keith said. “It becomes a matter of who wants it the most, and I really wanted it.”

One wrestler who seems destined to get it is the incomparable Laurence Jackson of Santa Monica. Jackson, a defending State champion, posted two wins at 126 pounds, running his winning streak to 81.

Also advancing was Frank Trujillo of Covina, a three-time State place-winner. Trujillo is battling a severely bruised shoulder, and yet scored a 19-1 victory over Mike Rist of Bella Vista.

Covina Coach Mark Haygood said Trujillo is doing it on guts alone. “He knew he was gonna have it tough because his shoulder has been so bad, he really hasn’t been able to do anything but run and ride the bike. But he wants to win, and someone is going to have to go after him to get it done.”

Other individuals who reached the semifinals were David Cabral of South Hills (112), Junior Saunders of Torrance (138), Scott Schumm of Edgewood (145), Mike Faulkner of Torrance (165), Miller Aupiu of Channel Islands (175), and Anthony Califano of San Marcos (191).

It was a tough day for the Los Angeles City Section as no wrestlers advanced beyond the first round.

The semifinals start this morning at 11:30 with the finals scheduled for 7 p.m.
