Junior College HIGHLIGHTS : Hernandez’s Sacrifice Fly Helps Valley to 6-5 Win
Bob Hernandez, who had tied the game with a two-run homer in the eighth, hit a scoring fly ball in the bottom of the ninth to give Valley College a 6-5 Mountain Valley Conference win over visiting College of the Canyons Tuesday.
Mike Anderson went the distance to collect the win for Valley (2-2, 6-7-1) and square his record at 2-2. He struck out nine while allowing seven hits and four earned runs.
Rocco Buffolino, a transfer from Valley, was the losing pitcher for the Cougars (2-1-1, 9-6-1), who came into the game ranked No. 8 in Southern California. Buffolino was the top hitter for Canyons with a single and a double in five at-bats.
Canyons jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Valley bunched four hits in the seventh inning to close the game to 5-3.
West L.A. 7, L.A. Mission 1
Mission College scored only one run while committing six errors to drop a Mountain Valley Conference game at West L.A. College.
Lee Carballo pitched a complete game to get the victory for the Oilers (1-3). He struck out six and walked just one.
Bob White (2-3) took the loss for the Free Spirit (1-2-1, 4-9-1). Right fielder David Mendoza and shortstop Manny Alfaro each went 3 for 4 for Mission.
Designated hitter Jody Brehm led West L.A. with a double, a triple, and two RBIs.
Moorpark 8, Santa Barbara 1
Steve Wapnick hurled his second Western State Conference complete-game victory to lead visiting Moorpark to victory. Wapnick (5-1) struck out eight and allowed only four hits.
Bruce Ketring had two runs batted in and Sean Lange doubled for Moorpark (4-1, 6-6).
Moorpark scored five runs in the second inning to allow Wapnick to breath easy.
Santa Barbara, which made five errors, fell to 1-4 in conference.
