What Happened to Last Year’s All-Valley Prep Cage Team?

Like father, like son.

Chris Reese, a 6-2 swingman from Saugus, averaged 12.4 points a game this season to lead the Cedarville (Ohio) College basketball team in scoring as a freshman.

Pete Reese, Cedarville class of 1960 and now the athletic director and basketball coach at L.A. Baptist College in Newhall, is the No. 4 scorer in Cedarville’s history.

Chris, turning down a chance to play for his father, decided instead to play for his old man’s alma mater, a NAIA-affiliated Baptist school of about 1,800 students.

One of three freshman starters for the Yellowjackets, he shot 49.2% from the field, 82.5% from the foul line and had a high game of 26 points against Denison.

He can pass his father on the school’s all-time scoring list by averaging about 18 points a game in his next three seasons.

Reese is one of five players on last year’s 10-member Times all-Valley basketball team who are playing basketball at four-year colleges. Two others are playing different sports in college, one is going to school at a junior college and two are still in high school.

Where they are now?

Jeff Campbell, Chatsworth--Generally considered the nation’s No. 1 volleyball recruit last spring, the 6-7 Campbell signed with UCLA. He is a starting middle blocker for the second-ranked Bruins, who are trying to win their fifth straight NCAA championship and 12th in 16 seasons.

Anthony Cook, Van Nuys--Player of the Year in the East Valley League as a junior last year, Cook won the same honor this season, averaging 20.3 points and 13.8 rebounds a game. He signed a letter of intent with the University of Arizona in November.

Eugene Jackson, Reseda--After starting the first 10 games of the season for Cal State Fullerton, Jackson saw only limited action the rest of the way, logging only 92 minutes in 16 conference games. He averaged 2.7 points and 2 assists in 14.3 minutes. He was The Times’ Valley Player of the Year last year.

Hunter Knapp, Crespi--Saw limited playing time for Loyola Marymount, averaging 2 points, 1 rebound and 8.4 minutes a game while appearing in 17 of the Lions’ 27 games.

Wally Manns, Reseda--After playing in eight games at Pierce College, averaging about 15 points and 9 rebounds a game, Manns quit school and transferred to Western Texas College in Snyder, Tex., where he will play next season.

Steve Mehr, Hart--A 6-6, 225-pound tight end, Mehr signed a football letter of intent with UCLA last winter and was red-shirted by the Bruins last fall.

Tyrone Mitchell, Cleveland--Had another big season at Cleveland, averaging 10.5 points and 9.7 assists for the Valley 4-A League champions. He established school assist records for career (479), season (232) and single game (14).

Marty Wilson, Simi Valley--As Pepperdine’s No. 3 guard, Wilson played 10.7 minutes a game for the West Coast Athletic Conference champions. He averaged 2.1 points and 1.3 assists a game, but shot only 34.3% from the field.

Mike Yoest, Crespi--Started 22 of 27 games for Loyola Marymount, playing 26.3 minutes a game and averaging 5.9 points and 4 rebounds. One of three freshman starters for the Lions, he played more than any of them, shooting 48.5% from the field and 71.4% from the foul line.
