Prep Baseball : Mater Dei Gets 3-0 Win Over St. Paul

The Mater Dei High School baseball team remained undefeated with a 3-0 Angelus League victory at St. Paul Wednesday.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Monarchs (7-0, 11-0) scored their last two runs in the second when John Dworzak singled with the bases loaded.

“They did cool our bats off,” said Bob Ickes, Monarch coach, noting that his team had 11 hits in the last St. Paul game and only six Wednesday.

Mater Dei’s Steve Watson (2-0) pitched the first five innings striking out seven.

In other Angelus League action:

Bishop Montgomery 4, Servite 2--the Friars stranded 10 runners, and dropped to third place in league after losing in a game played at Torrance. Servite scored once in the second inning on an RBI-single by Doug Beuerlein. But the Friars left the bases loaded in the first and second innings, abandoning two more runners in the third.

The Knights (3-4) produced all their runs in the fourth inning against Friar pitcher Jim Sanford (1-3), who gave up seven hits in four innings. Beuerlein was 3 for 3, and teammate Everett Musselman had two hits including a solo homer in the fifth. Servite (4-3, 7-6) fell one game behind second-place Bishop Amat (5-2).

In the San Luis Obispo Tournament:

Ventura 13, Dana Hills 2--The Cougars (8-4) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first-round game. In the second inning, Ventura increased the advantage to 5-0 against Dolphin pitcher Tim Strauch (2-2), who gave up seven hits. Dana Hills’ Mark Daniels had two hits and two RBIs as the Dolphins scored both their runs in the fifth inning. Dana Hills (6-5) plays St. Ignatius of San Francisco at 10 o’clock today.
