Prep Baseball : Sunny Hills Defeats Fullerton, 4-0 : Schicker and Abbott Lead First-Place Lancers to the Win

Sunny Hills High School defeated Fullerton, 4-0, Monday in Freeway League play at Sunny Hills.

Adrian Schicker went 2 for 3 and had an RBI for the Lancers (11-3, 5-0). His leadoff single in the fourth inning led to three runs. Tim Byrnes reached on an error that advanced Tim Imperiali, who was pinch-running for Schicker, to third. Troy Brown’s sacrifice fly to center scored Imperiali. David Wackerman then singled and went to second on the throw when Byrnes advanced to third. Pat Fegel singled in both runners.

In the fifth, Mike Lutz led off with a double for Sunny Hills. He advanced to third on a ground out. With two outs, Schicker singled Lutz home.

Fegel was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Pitcher Paul Abbott (5-1) was 2 for 3 and threw a two-hitter. The senior right-hander struck out 10 while walking 5.

In other Freeway League action:

Troy 16, Buena Park 3--The Warriors (8-5, 4-1) scored three runs in each of the first two innings and five more in the fourth to bury the Coyotes.

Troy’s Jeff Roaro-Jasso went 4 for 4 including a solo home run in first inning. Other Troy home runs included Jeff DeJesse’s three-run homer in the second and John Mash’s two-run home run in the fifth.

Buena Park had its share of home runs. Paul Rodriguez had a solo shot in the fourth and Anthony Badal had a solo home run in the seventh.

Tony Panetti (5-1) was the winning pitcher. The senior left-hander struck out eight in five innings.

GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE

Santiago 6, Los Amigos 2--The Cavaliers (4-7, 2-3) scored four runs in the fourth, fueled by a three-run home run from Ben Tauanuu. Rick Burns got the inning started with a single, Joe Marquez followed with a single and Anthony Candelas singled to drive in Burns. Later, Tauanuu hit the homer.

The Cavaliers scored two runs with two out in the third inning on three consecutive hits.

Los Amigos (5-8, 1-4) scored one run in the first. Wes Lang singled, stole second and scored on a single by Ralph Ramirez. The Lobos’ second run came in the fourth inning.

Santiago’s Rudy Meduena was 2 for 2. Trinidad Cisneros (3-2) was the winning pitcher and Scott Soukup (2-2) took the loss.

SOUTH COAST LEAGUE

El Toro 10, Dana Hills 6--The Chargers (9-8, 2-1) got the lead in the first inning on Scott Shockey’s three-run homer. El Toro catcher Frank Appice’s bases-loaded double scored three runs in the third. Shockey’s single later in the inning gave El Toro a 7-0 lead.

Dana Hills (6-7, 2-2) scored five runs in the seventh inning and got a solo home run in the sixth from David Kirkpatrick.

Shockey was 4 for 5 with five RBIs. Nick Adams (2-2) was the winning pitcher, while Ed Esteban (3-2) took the loss.

Mission Viejo 7, Laguna Hills 4 (8 innings)--Sean Campbell hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Diablos (11-3, 3-0) the victory.

Mission Viejo took the early lead with a two-run home run by pitcher Bob Brucato in the first inning. The Diablos scored again in second to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Sean Hardy hit a grand slam off Brucato, giving Laguna Hills a 4-3 lead.

In the sixth, the Diablos tied it on a sacrifice fly by David Hori, scoring Brendan Murphy. Brucato (6-0) got the win and went 3 for 5 with two RBIs.
